Rurubu River, alternatively known as Ruvubu or Ruvuvu, originates from the eastern region of Bujumbura. One of the major Burundi rivers, the Rurubu river, has an approximate length of 480 km of which only 130 km is inside the boundaries of Burundi. The Rurubu river becomes a part of the Kagera river in Rwanda.
Rurubu River in its initial stages flows in the southern direction. After sometime, the direction of the flow of the Rurubu river changes to the north-northeastern direction. The flowing Rurubu river acts as a natural boundary separating the two neighboring countries of Burundi and Rwanda. The longest head stream of the Rurubu river is the Ruvironza.
The Rurubu river basin is the extreme southern extension of the Nile river basin. The Ruvubu National Park is located beside the Rurubu or the Ruvubu river. The river valley of Rurubu consists of the meandering slopes providing a perfect place for the growth of swamp vegetation and gallery forest. A diverse range of plants and trees thrive in the Rurubu River valley in Burundi.
