Kagera River, one of the major Burundi rivers, is considered as one of the southeastern sources of the River Nile. Rising from the northern side of Lake Tanganyika in Burundi, the Kagera river, is formed by the convergence of the two head streams, Ruvubu and Nyawarongo, which in turn originate from the highlands in the east of Lake Kivu, in Burundi.
Alternatively spelled as Akagera, the Kagera river, flows through other countries as well. The Kagera river is 400 km long and forms part of the natural borders between the countries of Burundi and Rwanda. After a long journey through the countries of Africa, Kagera river drains in Lake Victoria. The Kagear river enjoys the status of being the largest tributary of Lake Victoria.
The water of Kagera river is not suitable for direct consumption. However the waters of the Kagera river is used for the generation of hydroelectricity in Burundi. The rapidly flowing waters of the Kagera river are capable of producing hydroelectric power for the use of the
people of Burundi. Necessary steps to utilize this power resource are being taken.
