Burundi Society consists of three ethnic groups. The Twas, the Hutus and the Tutsis. Several ethnic conflict have effected the Burundi Society to a great extent. But the common value they share is their believe in traditional way of life. But the culture of the Twas are much more distinct. Most of the people live in the rural area.
Society of Burundi also includes extended families that are called Rugo. For keeping the cattle and other animals the compound contains pens. The farmlands are consisted of several plots of land. The plots are situated at different altitudes. But the farmlands are separate from the Rugo. Several plots minimize the possibility of losing crops in case of any natural calamity.
The head of the family provide for the family. He takes all the important decisions. Wives respect their husband. The children are the most important part of the society. They are brought up bu their mothers. The elders are highly respected in the Burundi Society. Young boys are supposed to follow their fathers. The girls are there to perform the household duties.
Marriage is a crucial part of the society. Young people are suppose to take the blessing of their parents and elders. Bride-price has to be paid. Music, dance and poetry are integrated part of the society. People gather at a place during these celebrations. Society in Burundi is quite enriched because of the rich cultural practices of the hospitable people.
