The Republic of the Union of Myanmar is a country situated in southeast Asia. It was earlier known as Burma. Covering a total area of 261,227 square miles, Myanmar is the fortieth-largest country in the world. The estimated population is 58.8 million.

The government of Myanmar is a unitary presidential republic. The President is the head of state and head of government. Presently, Thein Sein is the President of the nation. Tin Aung Myint Oo Sai Mauk Kham is the Vice-President.

Myanmar is one of the poorest nations in southeast Asia with a long history of poverty, unemployment, stagnation, and isolation. Agriculture is an important sector with rice being the major agricultural product. The country is the second-largest producer of opium, in the world. The country has rich reserves of precious stones such as sapphires, pearls and jade. Myanmar produces ninety-percent of the world's rubies.
