Burkina Faso currency is CFA franc, the short form of Communaute Financiere Africaine franc. The acronym of CFA franc is XOF. Burkina Faso falls within the French Monetary Area. As such, only those notes or coins issued by Banque des Etats de l’Afrique de l’Ouest is considered valid. Banque des Etats de l’Afrique de l’Ouest is the Bank of West African States. The currency issued by Bank of Central African States is invalid.
The currency of Burkina Faso is available in two states: notes and coins. The notes of Burkina Faso are found in the denominations of XOF 500, 1000, 2500, 5000 and 10000. On the other hand, the coins come in denominations of XOF 1, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100 and 250.
Burkina Faso currency is exchangeable in the major hotels and banks. The banks are open from 7:30 am to 11:30 am and again from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm from Monday to Thursday. But on Friday, it is open from 7:30 am to 11:30 am and from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm.
Travelers are recommended to carry traveler’s cheque in US dollar or Euro to avoid any extra exchange rate charges. Some Euros can also be carried in cash. There is a very restricted acceptance of Master Card. Fourteen West African and Central African states use the Burkina Faso currency.
