Fromm 1946 to 2002, the government of Bulgaria was the owner of Balkan Bulgarian Airlines. During these years this airline was the largest airline of Europe. The former name of Balkan Bulgarian Airlines was Tabso. The airline received its present name in early 1968.

Due to crisis in the market of aviation Balkan Bulgarian Airlines got affected. During early 2001 the fleet of this airline was not up to the mark. Due to dearth of cash this airline sold few weekly flights to British Airways at the cost of six million dollars in 2002. In the year 2002 Bulgaria Air was set up as a heir to the bankrupt Balkan Bulgarian Airlines.
Balkan Bulgarian Airlines ceased functioning in the year 2001 and it was finally closed on October 2002.
