The long history of Bulgaria has created a multifarious culture that has assimilated, over the years, a number of languages which have mingled yet retain their idiosyncratic characters. The languages of Bulgaria thus come into being as a result of the merging of a number of civilizations and cultures. The official languages of Bulgaria are Bulgarian and Turkish.
Bulgaria has 11 languages, each of which has definite characteristics and history of origin. Armenian, Czech, Russian, Greek, Serbian are the Bulgarian languages that have entered the country at different ages and through various channels. Bulgarian is the most widely spoken and used language in Bulgaria. Its dialects are Palityan and Pomak.
Turkish is the second most widely used language in the country. It covers Kurdzhali region, southern part of Bulgaria, the area along the Danube river and in eastern Bulgaria. Danubian, Razgrad, Macedonian Turkish and Dinler are the dialects of Turkish.
Crimean Turkish is mostly spoken in north eastern part of Bulgaria. This too has a number of dialects. In the coastal region Gaguaz is the dominant language. Its dialects include Bulgar Gaguaz and Maritime Gaguaz. Other languages in Bulgaria include Macedonian, Balkan, Kalderash, Russian etc. With so many languages,the culture of Bulgaria is diverse and profoundly interesting.
