First Bulgarian Golden Age

First Bulgarian Golden Age, a significant period in Bulgaria history, was marked by advancement in all major aspects of the country. The First Golden Age of Bulgaria began from the late 9th and extended to the 10th century when it reached its peak. The First Bulgarian Golden Age was witnessed during the reign of Tsar Simeon I of Bulgaria.

Tsar Simeon I intended to stretch the already extensive boundaries of the kingdom of Bulgaria to conquer the Byzantine Empire. The prosperity of the country and the stable social and political conditions were the key reasons for the development of art, architecture, religion, culture, literature of Bulgaria.

The acceptance of Christianity as the religion of the state in 865 led to the establishment of monasteries which served as the unifying platform for the Proto-Bulgarians and the Slavs.
The monasteries of Bulgaria acted as the centers of development of various facets of culture during the First Bulgarian Golden Age.

The literati of Bulgaria contributed to the enhancement of the literature of the country. Literary feats like compilations and translations were also accomplished. The opening of art studios in the monasteries led to the emergence of talented artists. Besides being centers of culture, the monasteries of Bulgaria exemplified the fascinating architectural styles of the country developed during the First Golden Age of Bulgaria.
