President of Bulgaria



The President of Bulgaria is declared by the Constitution to be the Head of the state of Bulgaria. The Bulgarian President is elected by the citizens for a term of five years. The President is assigned with the task of upholding the unity and the integrity of the nation. He is the representative of the country in the international sphere. The President is assisted in his tasks by a Vice President. The President can seek a re-election but for one more term only. As the head of the state the President of Bulgaria has several functions. Article 98 of the Constitution of Bulgaria ordains that the President shall address the Nation and the National Assembly, take the decision regarding the scheduling of elections, sign international treaties, introduce laws and is responsible for the appointment and dismissal of state officials. The President is assisted in his tasks by a Vice-President. The post of the President in Bulgaria was formed on 12th July 1991 with the adoption of the Constitution. A republican state was established followed by the establishment of the office of the President. The office of the President of Bulgaria is presently occupied by Georgi Parvanov. He began his political career with the Bulgarian Socialist Party and was elected as the President of the state in November 2001.
