The political scenario in Bulgaria saw a revolutionary change after the collapse of the communists. There was a sudden surge of several political parties in Bulgaria reflective of the forces of democracy that were ushered into the country. Initially there were two major political forces in the country. One of them was the chief force behind the political insurgence and overthrow of the communists. It was known as the Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) and the other was the communists themselves trying to gain lost ground. The political parties in Bulgaria which were in disagreement with the erstwhile communist regime grouped themselves into several different political factions. There were three major political groups existent in Bulgaria. There were the dissident political parties like the Trade Union Podkrepa. There were the 'historical parties' like the Bulgarian Agrarian Peoples Party, the Socialdemocratic, The Radical-Democratic party and the Democratic Party. The third group of political parties was the one that was formed after the downfall of the communists namely the Christian-Democratic Party and the Republican Party. These parties combined to form the Union of Democratic Forces (UDF). The Bulgarian political parties also played a crucial role in the incorporation of Bulgaria into the EU as they represented the country and its strategies, introduced European political standards in the country and streamlined the political framework to make it at par with EU parameters.
