Bulgaria Elections

Bulgaria Elections comprise of presidential and parliamentary elections. Elections in Bulgaria are presided over by an independent
and autonomous Central Election Commission. The Commission comprises of representatives from all major political parties of the state. The Bulgarian nationals can cast their ballot after they come of age, that is, are over 18 years of age. The elected representatives remain responsible to the voters. Political parties, which intend to contest elections in the state, need to register themselves with the Commission beforehand. The President and the Vice-President are elected for a period of five years. The Parliamentary elections are, however, held after every four years. Elections for the local and regional bodies are held after every four years. The 2005 elections in Bulgaria exhibited a strange state of affairs as none of the contesting political parties managed to get more than 31% of the total votes and as many as seven parties managed a mere 5%percent. The electoral system in Bulgaria makes for the division of the country into thirty one electoral constituencies. There are a number of political parties in Bulgaria which contest the elections. While the presidential elections are held according to the two round majority run-off systems, the parliamentary elections are conducted through the proportional representation system.
