The history of
Bulgaria schools dates back to the 19th century when the National Revival movement brought a new dimension in the field of Bulgarian education. It was then that schools were established in Bulgaria. But the schools provided only basic education. Students who wished to pursue higher education had to go to other countries.
Bulgaria schools gained importance as primary education was made compulsory and free in the country after it became independent. Educational reforms introduced over the following years led to an increase in the number of primary schools in Bulgaria and establishment of secondary schools and institutes of higher education. The approach towards education in Bulgaria underwent a transformation with the beginning of the Communist regime in the country. From liberal arts more emphasis was given on IT.
Bulgarian schools fall under three categories, state school, municipal schools and private schools. Western education has greatly influenced the educational system in Bulgaria and the curriculum of the schools have now been modified according to that of the American schools.
