Situated in the eastern side of the Mountain Rhodope, Kardzhali is the capital of the Province Kardzhali. The town is located at a distance of 260km southeast of Sofia. Near the town lies the Kardzhali Dam and the Studen Kladenets Dam.

The economy of the city is mainly based on the retail trade. It is the major center for tobacco processing and has become an important location for industries related to machine building and metallurgy.
