Brunei Football is the most popular game of the nation. The Brunei National Football Team is controlled by the Football Association of Brunei. The Brunei Football association was founded in 15th March 1956 and it was known as Brunei State Football Amateur Association.
In 1993, the prefix "amateur" was removed and since then it was known as Football association of Brunei Darussalam. The national football team frequently participates in the Malaysian premiere league. The Brunei National team won the Malaysia World Cup in 99' and has marked their presence in the international scenario.
The Brunei Football team played in the Asian competition namely the Tiger Cup and the South East Asian Games. Brunei had qualified for the FIFA World Cup only once in 1986, and appeared in the Asian Cup in 1976. Till date the best achievement of Brunei football team was the winning of Malaysia Cup in 1999.
Presently there are 2,500 footballers in Brunei who are playing in 22 Brunei's registered club. Most of the footballers are either semi-professionals or amateurs.
