The Brunei revolt was a result of an opposition of the states of Borneo against the Malay Federation and of the unwillingness of the states to come under the political rule of the Malay federation. Thus, headed by Yassin Affandi and his rebels, the Brunei revolt took place on 8th December, 1962. The principal target of the Brunei revolt was Seria that is an oil region.
Various political disturbances that involved Indonesia and Malaysia finally led to Indonesia trying to prevent the formation of Malaysia and the Malaysia federation. In their efforts to stop the Malay federation from being politically active, Indonesia began covert operations. During this time the Indonesian agents along with the local people who were against the formation of the Malaysian Federation made arrangement for a revolt. This resulted in the rebellion in Brunei.
The Brunei revolt of 1962 began in the oil town of Seria. The rebels had the town under their control. But the Brunei government with the help of the British made sure that the region was freed from the control of the rebels. The revolt was suppressed by the Brunei government but the destruction that the revolt had brought with it was large scale, the traces of which are still found in the country.
