The history of Brunei narrates the story of the changing face of the country over the years of its existence. The first few pages of Brunei's history reveal that the country was the seat of the powerful sultans, a dynasty that continues to rule the country to this day.
The golden period of the history of Brunei was during the 15th and 17th centuries when the influence and control of Brunei sultanate spread over northwest Borneo and south Philippines.
The golden period of Brunei subsequently underwent a steady fall. By 19th century the nation had lost its past glory. European powers had established their rule over Brunei and the country became a British colony in 1888. Colonial rule made an emphatic impact on Brunei and left its prominent footprints on the pages of Brunei history.
In 1963 Brunei became the only kingdom in the Malay region which chose to remain dependent on Britain. Later in 1984, Brunei became an independent nation.
