Brunei is a wealthy country rich in oil and natural gas reserves. With a constitutional sultanate type of government, Brunei has as its ruler the sultan who is the head of government, the chief of state and the prime minister. The first son of the sultan and the heir to the throne is the crown prince of Brunei. He is called His Royal Highness.
The crown prince of Brunei holds an important position in the government of the country. He serves as a senior minister at the office of the prime minister who is the sultan. The crown prince in Brunei also holds the post of a general in the army of Brunei and an inspector in the police force of the country. Thus Brunei crown prince has several significant roles to play in the government and the administration of Brunei.
The present crown prince of Brunei is His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah who is the first born son of the present sultan of Brunei, His Majesty Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah. Prince Billah was royally proclaimed the crown prince of Brunei in 1998. After His Majesty Sultan Bolkiah, Prince Bolkiah is to become the sultan of Brunei.
