British Zoos



British Zoos include some of the best animal enclosures in the world. Almost all major cities in Britain possess a zoo. The Chester Zoo is Britain's largest zoo. All British zoos try to simulate the natural environment of the confined animals. Some animals like penguins are housed in a special micro-climactic zone specially designed for them.

Zoos in Britain are designed keeping in mind children' safety. These zoos of Britain enclose a mix of docile wild species and domesticated animals. British zoos also help in the conservation of endangered species. A list of the major British zoos includes the following:
  • Chester Zoo: Chester Zoo is Britain's largest zoo. The zoo is located in Cheshire.
  • Chester zoo occupies a massive land area of 110 acres. More than 5000 animals live in perfect replicas of their natural surroundings. The zoo remains open every day of the year except the Christmas Day and the Boxing Day. The opening time and the closing time can change with the seasons. The zoo provides a number of facilities including a free parking zone, a souvenir shop, locker and buggy hire facilities and the highly popular Ark restaurant.
  • Drusillas Park: Drusillas Park is constructed specially to create awareness among children for the wonders of wildlife. The list of animals in the zoo includes Meerkats, Beavers, Owls, Mongooses, Crocodiles and Porcupines among others. Drusillas Park is located in East Sussex at a distance of 12 miles from Brighton and 6 miles from Eastbourne. The zoo is open througout of the year except the Christmas Eve, the Christmas Day and the Boxing Day. In summer, the zoo remains open from 10 am to 5 pm, and in the winter it remains open from 10 am to 4 pm. The prices of entry vary from £11.20 in the off peak days to £13.45 in the working days. There are discounts for children, senior citizens and groups.
  • Edinburgh Zoo: This zoo is located at Edinburgh in Scotland. It is one of the world's leading zoos. The Edinburgh zoo opens at 9:00 am all the year round but the closing times change from one season to another. However, the animal houses close 15 minutes before the closing time. The admission price is £10.50 for adults and £7.50 for children. There are discounts for certain groups of visitors and for families. There are extra parking charges. There are a wide array of facilities including children and senior citizens, at the Edinburgh Zoo, including parking space, restaurants, and special facilities for the disabled and children. Edinburgh Zoo follows an extensive educational program, as well as conservation programs.
  • London Zoo: The London zoo is located at Regent's Park in London. The zoo occupies an area of 36 acres. Both mammals and reptiles are enclosed here. There are more than 650 species of animals in London zoo. It is one of the major attractions in London. An admission charge of £13 is charged for senior citizens, with concessions for students, senior citizens and disabled tourists. However, the entry to the London Zoo is covered by the London Traveler's Pass. The zoo opens at 10 am all throughout the year, but the closing times vary between 4 pm and 5.30 pm in the winters and the summers, respectively.
