Haunted Castles Britain



Haunted castle make their presence in many films and pieces of literature. The haunted palaces tell stories of violence, rape, and torture that was inflicted on a particular person and whose spirit is believed to roam the buildings ever since he breathed last.

The haunted castles in Britain with their supernatural atmosphere attracts a number of visitors from all over the world. England, Wales and Scotland have a number of such castles.

The notable haunted castles in Wales include:

  • Conwy Castle in Conwy
  • Caerphilly Castle near Cardiff
  • Dunraven Castle in Glamorgan
  • Castell Coch near Cardiff

    The Ruthin Castle located in North of Wales is known for Lady Grey who killed a local girl for having an amorous relationship with her husband. She was sentenced to death and till date her existence is supernaturally felt within the castle. Ruthin Castle is also famous for a dazzling ball of light that is believed to represent the dead souls. A soldier wearing one glove and an armor is also allegedly seen in Ruthin Castle.

    Conwy Castle in Wales presents a tragic story of a soldier, who was sent to a faraway place to fight a battle. His wife and child died on the day of his return while coming down from a steep staircase. The resident physician declared them dead in the lantern room of the castle. The bereaved souls of the soldier is still seen in the lantern room looking for the doctor.

    Scotland also has a number of such haunted places. The major castles in the country include:

    • Aldourie Castle in Inverness & Nairn
    • Duntrune Castle
    • Dunrobin Castle
    Duntrune Castle of Scotland tells the tale of Coll Macdonnell and the Campbells of Duntrune. Coll was coming to the Campbells to take some personal revenge. A piper, who was sent as a spy but was found and imprisoned, played a tune to warn Coll. Coll returned back. This provoked the Campbells and they cut off the hands of the piper. The skeleton of that piper was found in the castle. It is now believed that the eerie music heard at times is played by the piper.

    Dunrobin Castle also has an interesting tale to tell. The daughter of the 14th Earl was confined in the Dunrobin Castle in Sutherland & Caithness. It is said that the lady was kept confined to the upper floor of the Dunrobin Castle by her father. She died while trying to flee via the high window. Her presence is still felt inside the castle walls.

    Dover Castle located in Kent, England, is a place where a non-existent door opens and closes with a creaking sound, a lady in red color dress moves in the western staircase and a man with a half figure walks in the bedroom of the King.

    Windsor Castle in London is the place where King Henry VIII has been seen many times with an eerie moaning sound. The ghost of Herne, a loyal follower of King Richard II, exists in the castle, although he was fatally injured while saving the King. The specter of King Charles I is also seen in the Royal Library of the castle. The king was brutally guillotined in the English Revolution. The First Duke of Buckingham, Anne Boleyn - the wife of King Henry VIII and the King himself are also seen in the castle.
