Welsh cuisine, or the cuisine of Wales, has been hugely influenced by
English cuisine. However, local ingredients continue to feature prominently in the recipes of Wales. Welsh cuisine is famous world wide for its excellent taste. Lamb meat is the hallmark of Welsh cooking. Along with it, beef and pork are also popular. Dairy products are an important part of Welsh cuisine.
Some of the traditional Welsh dishes are Welshcakes, Crempogs and Welsh rarebit. Crempogs are small pancakes. Welsh rarebit is bread toast mixed with cheese and butter. The Laverbread is a delicacy prepared with seaweed. The Bara Birth is a kind of bread, which is traditionally baked with raisins, Zante currant and candied peel. Glamorgan sausage is a very popular snack in Wales and is cheese in breadcrumbs in the shape of a sausage. Faggots or the fresh pork meatballs are delicious and loved by the natives.
Cawl is one of the most popular dishes of Wales. It is a traditional Welsh stew made of leeks, lambs and vegetables. Lamb meat is cut into small pieces. Mutton, beef, pork or bacon can also be used instead of lamb, according to regional variations. The vegetables used for making the dish also vary but potatoes and carrots are the common ingredients. Leek is also another essential ingredient. This unique dish is cooked in an iron pot or a cauldron over the fire. Cawl is a one course meal. In many parts of Wales it is consumed in two courses. In the first course the broth is served and the second course contains the meat and the vegetables.
Good quality cheese is also available in plenty in Wales. There are many varieties of cheese that are consumed by the Welsh people and include Red Devil, Black Bomber cheese, y Fenni, Caerphilly and Llanboidy. Among drinks and beverages, beer is highly preferred in Wales. There are many vineyards in the area and export quality wine is produced from here.
