Britain war is an integral part of the long and eventful history of the land. The wars of Britain have played a decisive role in shaping and defining the nation's history. Although wars have regularly featured in the history of Britain, yet the World War II affected the country in an unprecedented way. It still remains as the most gruesome war fought on British soil. Britain was also a part of World War I. In the post-War period, the Falklands War was fought between Argentina and Britain, to settle the dispute over the claim of Falkland Islands.
Britain Early Wars
The earliest wars in Britain were mainly wars for territorial expansion and were fought among the many invading tribes in Britain fighting for territorial control. In one of most important wars fought 1066, popularly known as the Battle of Hastings, the Normans defeated the Anglo-
Saxons and gained over the land. A number of wars with the Scots followed, and remained a constant feature throughout the Plantagenet rule. It was also the time when Britain engaged in the protracted warfare with France, a war popularly referred to as the Hundred Years War.
One of the greatest wars fought in Britain was the War of Roses. Fought between the Houses of York and Lancaster, theis remains to be one of the bloodiest wars that virtually divided the nation on lines of allegience. The war was finally won by the Yorks. The York House lost control in the Battle of Bosworth which started the Tudor rule.
One of the most prominent feature of the Tudor age was the wars with Spain, that culminated in the celebrated British victory over the Spanish Armada during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. There are many famous battlefields of Britain where severe wars were fought in the past. The battlefields where battles such as Battle of Boyne, Battle of Culloden, Battle of Naseby, Battle of Hastings, and so on, were fought, are some of the historical battle sites in Britain.
Britain in World War I
Britain played an important part in the World War I or the Great War, as it popularly called. The war was fought during 1914 to 1918, between two groups namely the Allies and the Central Powers. Britain, Russia, France, Italy and United States formed the Allied forces and the Central Powers were formed by the countries of Austria-Hungary, Germany and the Ottoman Empire. The Germans were defeated in the World War I and they agreed to sign the Treaty of Versailles.
Battle of Britain
The Battle of Britain was a part of the Second World War. It was the first major battle, which ensued between the air forces. The battle of Britain has its roots to the effort by the German Luftwaffe to prove their superiority in air-borne war retaliation against the Royal Air Force (RAF). The Battle of Britain goes down as a landmark war and was the first defeat of Adolf Hitler. The British triumph in the Battle of Britain went a long in reinforcing the moral courage of the British military.
Britain in World War II
The World War II was fought between the Allies and the Axis. In Europe the war lasted for long six years from 1939 to 1945. Great Britain, France, Soviet Union, United States were the Allies and the Axis powers comprised of countries like Germany, Italy and Japan. The war began after Hitler went back on his promise and attacked Poland. The World War II is remembered in history as the worst man made destruction. The Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were razed to the grounds by atom bombs. Britain wars helped to format and rewrite world history.
