History of Wales Britain

History of Wales is a record of the struggle and determination of the Welsh people. It speaks of the sheer strength of mind of the natives who fought against all odds in order to survive and prosper. The Wales history begins from the time of the early settlers of the region who belonged to the Celtic race.

Early History of Wales

The early history of Wales started with the arrival of the Celts, the tribal community that established their settlements in Wales. Later on the Vikings, Anglo Saxons and Roman invaders compelled the Celts to move towards the west. From 400 AD until the 13th century Wales was isolated and divided into small kingdoms and principalities. The Roman invaders, who were the main reason behind the isolation of the Welsh tribes, continued to rule for several years. They left a huge mark on the religion and culture of the country.

Medieval History of Wales

By the beginning of the 10th century, Wales was under English dominance. After the Normans conquered Wales in 1066, they moved towards the western country. Bleddyn ap Cynfyn, the king of Wales was killed and the North of Wales was conquered by the Normans. This event led to a civil war in 1075. The Welsh revolt in 1094 won over the Normans and gradually revived much of their territories.

Modern History of Wales

Modern history of Wales saw the growth of industries. Widespread industrialization was responsible for the shaping up of the economy of modern Wales. The later parts of the 19th century and the whole of the 20th century in Wales were marked by the flourish of trade and commerce in Wales. Labor laws came to be formulated and socialism slowly began to gain grounds in the political scenario of the nation. The historical records of Wales form a rich panorama of the events that shaped the fate of this nation and that of its people.
