The Sanger Institute

The Sanger Institute is Britain's foremost genome research institute. This pioneer research institute is located in Cambridgeshire, England. It was set up in the year 1992 jointly by the Wellcome Trust and the Medical Research Council. Sanger Institute in Britain is named after the Nobel Prize winning bio-chemist Frederick Sanger. This institute is also known as The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. Sanger Institute has made some path breaking revelations regarding the role of human genome, and also the sequencing and interpretation of the same.

History of Sanger Institute

The famous research institute of Sanger was founded with the sole motive to map, sequence and decode human genome and genomes of other organisms. John Sulston was the founding Director of the institute. Since its inception, the research institute has been a key player in the field of genetics. In the year 2000, Allan Bradley was declared the new Director of the institute. Since then, the institute has achieved much and contributed towards research work in human genetics significantly.

Project works of Sanger Institute

The main project works of Sanger Institute are:
  • Human Genetics, which includes the Cancer Genome Project and the medical and population genetics
  • Model Organism Genetics
  • Pathogen Genetics
  • Bioinformatics
The Human Genetics project deserves a special mention. This project has helped scientists to map and sequence the human genome, with the sole motive to understand the characteristics of different human genes. The Cancer Genome project, which is a part of the Human Genome Project aims to understand the complex mutation of human genes when afflicted with cancer.

Library resources in Sanger Institute

Sanger Institute houses a well maintained library and information service. Well stocked library and the modern information service system help the students and the researchers in their work. The library has some valuable collections like:
  • Journals including both print and electronic ones
  • Book Catalogs including online safari tech books, different thesis and case studies, and new books
  • Encyclopedias
  • Reference Resources

Faculty of Sanger Institute

The Sanger Institute faculty comprises famous professors and lecturers and renowned bio chemists from different research areas like biochemistry and genetics. Each faculty member has his/her own respective research area. The faculty members of Sanger Institute include David Adams for experimental Cancer Genetics, Bart Barrell for Pathogen Informatics, Stephan Beck for Immuno genomics and the list continues further. Seminars and workshops are organized very often to promote research work.

Campuses of Sanger Institute

The Research institute is spread over two campus areas, both in Cambridgshire. The Sulston Laboratories are located in the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus, Hinxton, and Cambridge. The second building is the Morgan building, which is also located in Hinxton. As one of the pioneer research institutes, the Sanger Institute has explored unknown horizons of experimental and computational genome research.
