Brazil government history dates back to the 1500s when Brazil was first founded by the Europeans. The 16th to 19th centuries have witnessed the colonization of Brazil by Portugal. Brazil earned its independence from the Portuguese colonizers on September 7, 1822. Thereby emerged the constitutional monarchy, the Empire of Brazil. A disturbance was once again recorded in the Brazil government history when the military coup took control of Brazil in 1889. Following this hold by the military coup, a republican government was established. The Brazil government history has faced 'naked' dictatorship for three periods.
The dictatorship periods recorded in the Brazil government history are from 1930 – 1934, 1937 – 1945 and 1964 – 1985. If these periods are kept apart, the country of Brazil has always been a democratic republic.
In 1821, the king John VI of Portugal left Brazil to return to his European territory. When he left, Pedro, his elder son took the control of Brazil. Pedro was though liked by the common mass, was not favored by the landed elites. He was not accepted as the Brazil head for his political incompatibilities with Brazilian politicians. He left for Portugal leaving behind his 5 year old son Pedro II. The slave rebellion took place in the city of Salvador da Bahia in Brazil. Pedro II was throned as the emperor in 1840 at the minor age of 14. It was Pedro II who brought a change in Brazil government history. He started a parliamentary rule which lasted till 1889. The Republican rule prevailed during military rule. The Presidential Federal Republic type of Government started working after the end of the military reign and it has continued till date (with 3 break-ups during dictatorship).
