Belem Brazil located in the northeastern part, is the largest city and the state capital of Para. Housing as many as 1.421 million people, it forms the gateway to the famous Amazonian region together with Manaus. It is also called “Cidade das Mangueiras” or ‘the City of Mango Trees’, owing to numerous such trees growing there.
Captain Francisco Caldeiras de Castelo founded Belem Brazil on 12th January, 1616, as the Portuguese monarchical representative to [protect the region from British, French and Dutch colonization. Initially called “Feliz Lusitânia”, the name of the place altered twice prioe to attaining the final name ‘Belem’.
Situated on 1° 27' S latitude and 48° 29' W longitude, Belem Brazil has the southernmost part of the Amazon mouth lying to its north. It is basically a rainy city, with very high relative humidity. Subtle climatic variations on a daily basis make the climate appear slightly equatorial. The period between January to May is considered to be the wettest of all times, with rise in temperature despite regular showers.
Belem Brazil prides itself for being one of the busiest ports, 60 miles from the Atlantic up the Para River. It is also a significant economic and cultural center in north Brazil. The rubber industry in the region, followed by the cultivation of fresh fruits, fishes, medicinal and other plants offers sufficient economic support to the land. Added to this, are numerous travel destinations like the Federal University of Pará, vibrant local nightlife, traditional music (Carimbó) and dance (Boates), Samba shows invite worldwide tourists to participate actively and be integral parts of assorted Belem culture. The famous Goeldi Museum on the Amazon with its varied zoological and ethnological collections adds to the popular attractions.
