HIV AIDS in Botswana is bravely fought by the Government of Botswana. The year 2005 recorded 270,000 cases of HIV AIDS in Botswana. To fight the menace of HIV infections in the country, the Government of Botswana in association with many voluntary organizations have started to raise awareness among the citizens. The Government spends a big part of its budget to fight this epidemic. There have been foreign donors like the African Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Partnerships (ACHAP) and the BOTUSA project as well, who have lent their supportive hand to wipe out HIV AIDS from Botswana. The Government has set a target to put a stop to any new case of HIV infection by 2016.
The public education and awareness programs are held regularly by organizations like Youth Health Organization (YOHO) to educate the citizens of Botswana about AIDS. The HIV Prevention programs held on regular basis include education for young people. The citizens are educated on the requirement and necessity of blood safety. Education programs also provide adequate information on the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT). Condoms are widely distributed and citizens are told about the advantages of using condom.
The AIDS awareness has been spread not only to the civilians of Botswana, but also to the doctors and nurses. The KITSO Training Program has been set up for this cause by the Harvard AIDS Initiative and the Botswana Ministry of Health. The HIV specialized doctors have been brought from the USA and Europe to provide the practical training courses to Botswana's medical teams.
Botswana has emerged as a model for the other African nations in the case of fight against HIV AIDS.
