The Botswana People's Party fights elections in accordance with Botswana's well established democratic principles. The African country is divided into a number of constituencies for administrative purposes. Residents of each constituency elect their own candidate to represent their collective aspirations in Botswana's Parliament. The elected candidate has a tenure of five years before fresh elections are held. The citizens of Botswana enjoy universal suffrage and any person who has attained the age of 18 years may vote or contest for election. The principal condition imposed on a potential political candidate is that the applicant must not have a criminal record or exhibit any mental abnormality. The potential parliamentarian must also show a reasonable level of financial independence.
