The
Bamangwato ethnic group is one of the most important among the eight tribes in Botswana. The first President of Botswana was Sereste
Khama and he belonged to the
Bamangwato ethnic group. The Bamangwato tribe in Botswana belonged to the 18th century. From this it can be conferred that the Bamangwato tribe was not socially and economically advanced. Their livelihood basically dwelt upon basic hunting, cultivation and cattle rearing. The tribe of Bamangwato lived within a particular society, which was created to meet their needs. For instance, the Bamangwato tribe in Botswana had their societal structure, political and religious beliefs and similar customs and norms.
Being a tribal group, the Bamangwato people were not treated at par with the rest of the civilized society. This tribal group of Botswana was mainly confined in areas suitable for the purpose of cultivation. However, with passing time, the Bamangwato tribe made great efforts to uplift themselves and hence they successfully reached the apex of the society within a short span of time. Some of the famous rulers of Bamangwato were Mathiba a Moleta, Matsheng a Kgari, Sedimo a Molisiwa, Sediegeng Kgamane, Kegori a Kgama Pebane, Serogola a Gagoitsege, Tshekedi a Kgama, Khma II a Kgari, Kgama I a Mathiba and few others.
