Mining in Botswana

Mining in Botswana includes coal mining as well as diamond mining in the country. The Morupule Colliery is the only coal mine in Botswana and
is situated in the region of Palapye. The Morupule Colliery is under the ownership of Debswana and is operated by the same, which is a partnership between De Beers and the Government of Botswana.

The Morupule Colliery was founded in the year 1973 for the purpose of serving the Bamangwato Concessions, nickel mine and Ltd copper. In the later years however it has been expanded to supply raw materials to various power plants as well as industries of the country. The nearby Morupule Power Station bases itself on the Morupule Colliery, which is one of the important mining areas in Botswana.

There are a total of four mines where the Mining in Botswana for diamond is being done. These Botswana Mines include the Damtshaa diamond mine, Letlhakane diamond mine, Jwaneng diamond mine and the Orapa diamond mine. Among all these diamond Mines in Botswana; the Orapa Diamond Mine is the largest producer of diamonds in the world. The Diamond Mines of Botswana at Opara is located in the Boteti Sub-District of the country. It is also the oldest among all the mines in Botswana.
