Botswana Popular Music

Popular Music Botswana includes mostly Jazz music. Like most of the African countries, Botswana too has jazz music as the most popular form of music in Botswana.
Unlike its name suggests, the jazz music of Botswana has very little or at times no resemblance to the African American genre which bears the same name. Majority of the Popular Music Botswana were being purchased since all these years, however lately, there has been a significant rise in the effort of the native musicians to produce their own songs and tunes.

Gumba-gumba is one of the most dominant form of Popular Music Botswana. The Gumba-gumba is basically a modernized version of the music of Zulu and Tswana ethnic group. Gumba-gumba amalgamates the tunes and rhythms of both Tswana music and Zulu music and modernizes it with its own colors by incorporating a pinch of the traditional jazz. The term “gumba” actually means party in the colloquial language.

Botswana's popular music is an essential aspect of Botswana life and culture. Apart from all the other specific genres, church choirs are still considered as the most popular music in Botswana. Most of the Popular Music Botswana still arrives from the European countries, South Africa and the United States.
