Opened in 1997, the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute is a modern building that presents series of exhibitions to enhance the understanding of the underwater mysteries. Underwater Exploration Institute of Bermuda houses a museum that holds an overwhelming collections of picture of harbors.
Chief Attractions of BUEI:
- The Teddy Tucker Ship rack Gallery displays many of the ship racks discovered by renowned archaeologist Teddy tucker. There are exhibits of ampoules of opium from the Constellation. Display of glassware from wrecks of the Lord Amberst (1778) and L'Herminie (1838) is in demonstration too, which show how bottle making developed in 60 years span.
- Diving exhibition tracks out the development of diving. There is a full size replica of Bathysphere, a spherical device Charles Beebe submerged 3,028 of the coast and hold the record for 15 years. Also in display is Exosuit, a suit similar to astronaut suit, constructed of Titaniumit is used to reach a depth of 600 feet and save sunken submarines.
- BUEI displays thousands of shell collections by Jack Lightbourne.
- A 500 pound 27 Foot, life size replica of giant squid in the Entrance hall of Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute
- Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute has a restaurant La Coquille, which provides marvelous view of the Hamilton harbor.
