Bermuda Islands


Bermuda Islands, renowned for its pink sandy beaches and sensuous natural beauty, is a British overseas territory in the North Atlantic Ocean. Located off the east coast of the United States- it is the oldest remaining British overseas territory settled by England. The territory consists of approximately 138 islands. Bermuda's capital,the city of Hamilton, lies in Pembroke Parish on the largest island, which itself is sometimes called “Bermuda”.

Bermuda Islands came into existence around 1503 AD. It takes its name from the Spanish sea captain Juan de Bermudez, who sighted the uninhabited island . The Islands of Bermuda is considered to be an important navigational landmark for galleons crossing the Atlantic between Spain and the New World.

Today the only military unit remaining in Bermuda Islands is the Bermuda Regiment, an amalgam of the voluntary units. As the offshore abode of many foreign companies , Bermuda has a highly developed international business economy. Bermuda's per capita income is approximately half that of U.S.

A visit to the Islands in Bermuda offers the attractions which includes:

  • Historic St.Georges-a designated World Heritage Site
  • Royal Navy Dockyard-the most popular visitor site
  • St.David's Lighthouse-a famous lighthouse still in daily use.

The culture of Bermuda Islands is a blend of British and African heritages. Gombey dancing is the most interesting art form unique to Bermuda. Every year Bermuda hosts an International Film Festival .

People who are fond of adventure sports will not be disappointed on their visit to Bermuda Islands . All kinds of sports are a popular pastime in Bermuda. Some of the most popular sports of Bermuda are:

  • Cricket

Bermuda has a population of roughly 63,000. The official language is English but some people also speak Portuguese. The majority religion of the island is Christian.
