Bermuda Forts


Bermuda accounts for 90 Bermuda forts built between 1612 and 1957. Forts of Bermuda are mostly constructed in such a manner that even today they stand unspoilt and erect. Many of the Bermuda forts are now a part of world Heritage sites, which are now maintained by government of Bermuda.

Famous Bermuda of forts are:

  • Burnt Point Fort is located at the end of Ferry Reach and is m ade up of soft Bermudian stone. The fort was prepared to defend the mouth of Ferry Reach Channel. One can reach this place by foot only.
  • Fort Albert is situated on the top of a hill overlooking the east coast of St George's island. The fort was bu ilt in 1840 to defend Narrow Channel, their only channel to the dockyard.
  • Fort Cunningham located on the southern half of Paget Island, was built in 1820 to defend the entrance to Narrows Channel. It was again rebuilt in the 1870s for nine Rifled Muzzle Loader cannons. This fort could be reached only by boats.
  • Fort Hamilton was built in the 1870s to protect the Hamilton Harbor. This Bermuda Forts is situated on the eastern part of Hamilton and encloses splendid view of the fort, gardens, lawns dungeons etc.
  • Fort George, built on the top of the highest peak of St George's Island, was used as a signaling station. Fort George has a limited access only.
