The Bermuda Race which is also known as the Newport Bermuda Race is a race on the yacht. It starts from New Port which is on the Rhode Island and ends in the island of Bermuda. This Bermuda Race covers a distance of 635 nautical miles. This special Bermuda race is an open Bermuda ocean race .
There are participants from different parts of the world and there is a strong competition to win the trophy.
In 1906 the Bermuda Race was held and surprisingly there were three contestants. The period 1900 to 1920 saw many Bermuda Races. In 1926 it was decided by the Cruising Club of America and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club to hold the match at even numbered years. This particular schedule was followed but there was interruption during the World War II .Earlier the race began from Montauk, New London, Marblehead and Gravesend.
From 1939 the Bermuda race starts only from Newport.
Nick Nicholson who is a member of the Volvo Ocean Race Rule Management Group and also a navigator has been appointed the next chairman of the Bermuda Race. This next Bermuda Race will start on June 20, 2008. Commodore Ned Rowland of the Cruising Club of America and Commodore Andrew Cox of the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club had been given the responsibility of appointing the chairman.
