Bermuda's politics has witnessed lots of ups and downs at past and though the island of Bermuda is a very small one still it has strong political set ups .Bermuda which is a Territory in the British Overseas works on self government. The Queen is the official head of the state. The power of appointing the Governor lies with the Queen. External affairs, police, security and defense are controlled by the Governor.
The Bermuda Politics is divided into two legislative chambers. One is the house of assembly and other is the Senate. The Progressive Labor Party was the first political party of Bermuda .It comprised of Black and white working class. The West Indian Bermudians started dominating the party.
The first election in Bermuda was held on May 1968.Earlier the property owners and citizens above the age of 21 were allowed to vote. The property owners had strong influence in the Bermuda politics. There was a small civil disturbance among the black men in 1977.
There are 36 members in the House of assembly. The leader which wins the maximum seats will be elected the Premier. The Premier then forms the government in the cabinet. The party with the least number of seats becomes the Opposition.
There are 11 members in the Senate .The Governor appoints the five members' .All the bills must be passed by the House of assembly and the approval of the Senate and the Governor should be there.
