Benin Ethnic Groups

The Republic of Benin has a number of ethnic groups living inside its territory. The demography of Benin is predominantly African. The dominant among the many Benin ethnic groups is the Fon tribe.

The different Benin ethnic groups occupy different parts of the West African country. The Fon is the dominant African tribe. They make up about 40% of the total population count. They are found in large numbers in southern urban cities like Cotonou. The Fon is concentrated in the southern part of the country. The Yoruba makes up the second largest ethnic tribe in Benin. The Yoruba bears a relation to the Nigerian Yoruba and lives in the south-eastern part of Benin. They are closely intermixed with another tribe- the Goun.

The Bariba makes up the fourth largest tribal population in the Republic of Benin. They are made up of several tribal sub-groups closely related to each other. The Bariba tribe dominates the north-eastern part of the country. Other minor Benin ethnic groups include the Dendi, Somba, Pila, and Djougou. The nomadic Fulani is also present in the country. Each tribal ethnic group speaks their own language. The common language for communication for all the tribes is French.
