The
languages of Benin include those spoken by different ethnic tribes present in the West African country. The common language for communication between different ethnic tribes is French. French is also the national official language of the country.
The different languages of Benin are spoken by their respective tribal speakers. The largest ethnic group of the country is the Fon. The Fon language is used by more than 1.7 million native speakers. The Yoruba language is the second most popular spoken language of Benin. The Aja, Ayizo and the Bariba languages are also used by many people. The Fulbe and the Gun languages make up the minority.
The Benin languages are derived from the principal African language grouping. There are 3 language families present in the Republic of Benin: the Nilo-Saharan, the Afro-asiatic and the Niger-Congo. The Nilo-Saharan language is spoken by people of the Muslim areas present in the country. The Voltaic languages dominate the Northern provinces.
