The Republic of Benin is an equatorial country. The Benin rivers provide an economic lifeline to many Benin citizens. They are a source of irrigation water and also an avenue for low cost transport.
The Benin rivers flow from the plateaus of southern Benin to the Atlantic Ocean. The plateaus are demarcated into valleys by a number of rivers. The major rivers of Benin include the Oueme river and the Niger river.
Oueme River
The Oueme river flows down from the southern Benin plateaus to the Atlantic Ocean. The river crosses areas of flat lands interspersed with rocky hills along the way. The altitude of the rocky hills does not extend beyond 400 meters.
Niger River
The Niger river is a major river in the western part of Africa. It is the third longest river in the African continent. The great African river carries little sediment due to its high rock origins. The river is a vital water transport link in the West African country.
