Bight of Benin

The Bight of Benin is a type of bay on the coast of the Republic of Benin. Benin is an independent country situated on the western part of the African continent.

The Bight of Benin is a large body of water partially bordered by the West African coast. The bight starts from the geographic entity of Cape St. Paul. It stretches eastward for a distance of 400 miles. The bight of Benin culminates at the Nun outlet of the Niger river. The Bight of Bonny extends the natural geographic formation to the east. The Bight of Benin is regarded as a part of the Gulf of Guinea.

The Bight of Benin was once associated with the slave trade. Many slaves started their journeys towards European colonies in ships from the bay itself. The British controlled the trade in its heyday.
