Benin flora and fauna follows the pattern of the flora and fauna of the West African region. The Republic of Benin is believed to contain at least 3000 species.

The West African country of Benin suffers from ecological problems like deforestation and desertification. The specter of extinction of Benin Flora and Fauna is fast becoming a reality. True forests are few and far between. The vegetation is mainly along the water bodies in the country. The coastal areas have natural coconut plantations. The land along the river banks contains trees like oil palms. The savanna woodlands are found in the interiors of the largely arid country.

Animal Benin

The list of animal Benin includes the large species of mammals. Big animals like hippopotamus, elephant and giraffe graze in the northern part of the country. Commonly found wild animals include small deer and antelopes. Poaching is a major threat to sustaining wildlife in Benin.
