Judiciary of Belize is an independent division of the government of Belize. The appointment of Belizean judiciary was made by the crown. England's common law constitutes the Belizean law, which is increased through local legislation. The Belizean judiciary comprises of the Supreme Court, court of Appeal and Magistrate's Courts.
The Chief Justice presides over the proceedings of the Supreme court in Belize. The Chief Justice is appointed by the governor general in advice with Leader of Opposition and the prime Minister. The appointments of other justices are made by the governor general. The Supreme court has original jurisdiction in both criminal and civil cases. Even the Magistrate court's appeals are heard here.
Magistrate courts in Belize have the jurisdiction to hear less serious criminal and civil cases. These types of courts can impose sentences up to 6 months and fines.
Court of Appeal hears the appeals that are made from Supreme court. The court of Appeal is led by a president. This president is elected by the governor general. The governor general makes this appointment consulting the Prime Minister and Leader of opposition of the country.
Any case that involves the constitution's interpretation, both civil and criminal cases can be appealed to Privy Council's Judicial committee based in London.
