History of Belize

The history of Belize chronicles the rise and fall of several dynasties which ruled over the country. Belize was the seat of the Mayan civilization for a considerable period. The Mayan Civilization took several centuries to develop and reached its peak between 250 A.D and 900 A.D. The Maya civilization gradually approached its decline. Several factors contributed to this including a change in the climactic conditions and the dearth of trading materials. Subsequently it was ruled over by the Spanish and the British. In fact the Spanish and the British were always trying to out do each other in trying to exercise their influence over the region. The British, however, managed to establish and maintain their hold over Belize and colonized it. The British into the Mayan lands pushed them on to a back foot. They were forced to retreat back into the forests. But the Mayans did not give it up easily and put up a confrontation. After the British conquest it came to be known as British Honduras. It finally gained its independence from Britain on 21st September 1981.
