The educational system of
Belize schools is based on English form of education. Thus, schools in Belize follow three levels of educational system such as primary, tertiary and secondary. The primary education is mandatory for 8 years to every Belizean child, which include infant classes for 2 years and another 6 standards.
Secondary educational system includes four forms. The sixth form of education refers to post secondary course for 2 years. This sixth form intends to educate students for A-Level examinations. This sixth form educational institutions had added degrees for Associates of arts from 1970s, which is approved by United States Association of Junior Colleges.
Some of Belize post secondary institutions are Belize College of Agriculture, Belize School of Nursing and Belize Teacher's College.
The management of Belizean schools varied according to the different levels of educational system. In late 1980s a group of religious congregations had the control of many primary schools but 50% of secondary schools were governed by private or governmental bodies.
One of the remarkable developments of the 1980s was the prevalence of governmental institutions at secondary level. At present, many offshore medical schools in Belize have been providing medical education to its students. Some of these schools are:
- St. Luke's University School of Medicine, Belmopan
- Medical School of the Americas( Belize), Ambergris Caye
- InterAmerican School of Medical Science, Corozal Town
Belize schools aim to provide quality education to every student of the country.
