Stann Creek District



The diverse topography of the Stann Creek District of Belize makes it one of the fascinating tourist destinations of the country. With an area of 986 sq miles, the Stann Creek District, is located at the lower slopes of the Maya Mountain, featuring the spectacular Victoria Peak. The coastline of Stann Creek district has numerous beaches and provides access to the nearby cayes.

A drive through the Hummingbird Highway into Dangriga, the center of the Stann Creek District, offers excellent views on the way. Dangriga is the land of the Garifuna people, descending from the Carib Indians and the slaves originating in Africa. The whole Stann Creek Valley is dotted with small Mayan villages nestled in the citrus groves.

The islands off the shore of the Stann Creek District offer tourists with an opportunity of experiencing the varied marine life including the rare manatee or sea cow existing in the crystal blue waters of the sea. The coral reef lying in close proximity to the Stann Creek District is home to numerous aquatic specimens.

A portion of the Cockscomb Nature Reserve lies inside the area of the Stann Creek District. It is the location of the only jaguar reserve of the world and attracts a number of tourists every year. The cayes off the Stann Creek District also offer various kinds of adventure sports like diving, snorkeling, etc.
