Belize languages form an integral part of the Belize culture and tradition. Since Belize, a country on the north eastern coast of America on the Caribbean was under the British rule for several decades, English is the most important of all the languages in Belize. Thus till today, English is the only official language in Belize. Belizean Creole, which is the local language of Belize is also one of the important Belize Languages. Apart from English and Belizean Creole, the other languages of Belize are Spanish, Japanese, Korean and North Levantine, which are widely spoken among few groups.
62% of the Belizeans being bilingual, or even trilingual have a hold on more than one language. Those who are bilingual speak in English and Belizean Creole. However 75% of the population in Belize take English as their first language. However only 20% spoke in English by preference. On the other hand, 1/3rd of the population speak in Spanish.
Among the Belize languages, it is a bit difficult to differentiate between English and the local vernacular, Belizean Creole. In the schools, English as a language is always more preferred and the standard of the language is highly maintained. It is also used as the medium of instruction in the schools.
