The first appearance of
Belarus at the Olympics took place in the year 1952 in the Summer Games of Helsinki held in Finland. Before Belarus achieved her independence, the athletes used to play for the former Soviet Union.
It was only in the year 1994 that Belarus for the first time competed as an independent country in the Winter Olympics, Norway. Belarus is a part of Summer Olympics since 1996.
Belarus at the Olympics has exhibited a good deal of success. In the year 1991, the National Olympic Committee of Belarus (NOC) was established.
The various events in which Belarus has been constantly taking part are:
- Weightlifting, Speed Skating, Boxing, Cycling, Modern Pentathlon, Alpine Skiing, Canoing, Shooting, Wrestling, Gymnastics, Biathlon, Track and Field, Rowing, Judo
Belarus in Summer Olympics
Belarus has participated thrice in the Summer Olympics held in Atlanta (1996), Sydney (2000) and Athens (2004). It has made the country proud by taking 49 medals back home. Out of these, 6 are gold medals, 15 silver medals and 28 bronze medals. Majority of the medals won by Belarus in Summer Olympics were achieved in the fields of Weightlifting, Athletics, Shooting, Gymnastics and Boxing.
Belarus in Winter Olympics
Belarus took part in the 1994, 1998, 2002 and 2006 Winter Olympics held at Lillehammer, Nagano, Salt Lake City and Turin respectively. Belarus in Winter Olympics has won 6 medals for the country; 3 in silver and the rest 3 in bronze.
