Kvass

Kvass is mainly a traditional alcoholic drink of Belarus. In the ancient times, the people who mainly consumed Kvass were the peasants. After toiling in the field for hours the peasants drank this mild alcoholic drink to rejuvenate themselves. The drink not only rejuvenated their minds, but also their souls. The chief ingredient used to prepare this drink is:
  • rye
  • bread
  • yeast
  • berries
These ingredients are fermented to produce Belarus Kvass. This drink is usually consumed during the summer. Kvass of Belarus is very refreshing during the summer. The drink is wildly consumed in Russia and Ukraine.

The alcohol content is very low and it is often flavored by strawberries and mint. Even children can consume this drink as it is very low in alcoholic content. Russians also use them in cooking a special type of soup named Okroshka.

In Belarus, Kvass is prepared both in factories and households. Homemade Kvass is made with black or rye bread usually fried or baked into croutons. In addition to it, sugar or fruit and Kvass fermentation starter is mixed. Commercial Kvass is made with sugar, carbonated water and malt extract. The vendors of Kvass are found on the streets of major cities in Russia.
