Greek Catholic Church in Belarus



The Greek Catholic Church in Belarus had to undergo various antagonistic reactions since its establishment in the sixteenth century. The Russian Government and the
Catholic Church of Ukraine tried to suppress Greek Catholic Church in Belarus. The Russian Orthodox Church integrated it after the Second World War. The church rite was mainly Byzantine.

The Greek Catholic Church of Belarus again came up following the independence of Belarus in 1991.There were around ten parishes of the church that had applied for registration. By the year 1992, there were around three priests and two deacons in the church. Though the church was finding it difficult to obtain the registration of the government but a survey taken during that time proved about a lakh of inhabitants of Belarus followed Greek Catholicism.

The situation has improved a lot over the years. The Greek Catholic Church of Belarus have about twenty parishes. About ten priests and fifteen seminarians are present at this point of time. Thirteen out of them have received the recognition of the government. Two among these parishes have churches while others have pastoral centers and an oratory.
