Government and Politics in Austria


Government and Politics in Austria is almost a sculpt of peace and stability ever since the inception of democracy in 1945. The years following the period of war and upheavals in Austria, the existing political tension, national enmities and alien interference almost immobilized the activities of the Austrian government which derived its powers and authorities from the 1920 Constitution. It was only after the Second World War that Parliamentary Democracy saw its re-establishment and started operating smoothly as ever.

Austria is a democratic federal republic which functions efficiently on the basis of the Executive, Legislature and the Judiciary. Executive Powers mainly rest with the Government in Austria , and it also exercises the Legislative Powers with the help and participation of both the Houses of Parliament. The Judiciary however, is an autonomous body, responsible neither to the Executive nor the Legislature for its actions.

The Executive head of the Austrian Government is called “Bunderprasident” or the Federal President, who is elected by the people for a term of two years in office. He in turn, appoints other cabinet ministers on the basis of the Presidential recommendations.

The Legislative unit of the Austrian Government comprises the bicameral Parliament. It's National Council with 183 members, is elected for a tenure of four years by means of proportional representation. The Judiciary is engaged in offering amicable solution to diverse legal problems appearing in course of running the government.

Politics in Austria are managed by several political parties who act as the main pillars of the country's political structure, activities and stability. It was after the World War II that the entire Austrian nation enjoyed political stability and this successful trend is still in progress.
