Klagenfurt or Celovec in Slovenian is the capital of the federal state of Carinthia in Austria. It falls within the district of Klagenfurt.


Klagenfurt or Celovec in Slovenian is the capital of the federal state of Carinthia in Austria. It falls within the district of Klagenfurt and stretched up to 120.11 square km in area.

The total population is over 103,000 out of which almost 1,700 belong to Carinthian Slovenes. Located 446 meters above sea level, Klagenfurt has latitudinal and longitudinal coordination of 46°37′ N 14°18′ E.

Geographically, Klagenfurt is surrounded by snow-peaked mountains that are covered by forests called the Ulrichsberg, up to 1,000 meters. To the south lies the Karawanken mountain range, separating Carinthia from Slovenia.

Klagenfurt is divided into 15 districts:

  1. I-IV Innere Stadt
  2. V St. Veiter Vorstadt
  3. VI Völkermarkter Vorstadt
  4. VII Viktringer Vorstadt
  5. VIII Villacher Vorstadt
  6. IX Annabichl
  7. X St. Peter
  8. XI St. Ruprecht
  9. XII St. Martin
  10. XIII Viktring
  11. XIV Wölfnitz
  12. XV Hörtendorf
  13. XVI Welzenegg

These above districts are again subdivided into 25 Katastralgemeinden namely, Klagenfurt, Neudorf, Ehrenthal, Goritschitzen, Blasendorf, Großbuch, Großponfeld, Hortendorf, Gurlitsch I, Hallegg, Kleinbuch, Lendorf, Marolla, Nagra, St. Martin bei Klagenfurt, St. Peter am Karlsberg, Sankt Peter am Bichl, St. Peter bei Ebenthal, St. Ruprecht bei Klagenfurt, Stein, Tentschach, Viktring, Waidmannsdorf, Welzenegg and Waltendorf.

Klagenfurt’s climatic conditions are dominated by the typical Continental type and attributed to frequent fogs throughout the year. It is warmer than other parts of Austria, due to winds coming from the Karavanke Mountains to the south, through the Fohn wind. The average temperature is around 9.3°C, due to the global warming effect.
